Mikulski Writes Obama On Data Breach

July 13th, 2015 by WCBC Radio

Dear Mr. President,

I am writing out of a deep concern for the safety, security, and personal finances of my constituents and the 21.5 million Americans across the country affected by the breach of sensitive security clearance information on federal employees, retirees, federal contractors, many of whom are in small business, and their families at the Office of Personnel Management (OPM).

Maryland is home to more than 300,000 federal employees and retirees living and working in Maryland. My constituents were the victims of a crime. They were targeted because of the work they do for America and the theft of their personal data has put them in harm’s way.

I strongly urge you to take immediate Executive Action to strengthen the response to the data breach to prevent any efforts at blackmail, phishing, spoofing, or identify theft from harming the safety and security of my constituents. The victims of the breach must be provided with lifetime credit-monitoring services and identity theft protection as well as unlimited liability protection for related damages. Furthermore, Mr. President, I expect you to inform Congress of the legislative reforms needed to secure dot-gov, secure these databases, and protect our federal employees and their families. Cyber shields must be up, fit for duty, and fit to protect our people.

Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter. I look forward to working with you on this important issue.

Sincerely,

Barbara A. Mikulski

United States Senator
