Miller Says Urgent Need for Transportation Funding Bill

Maryland Senate President Mike Miller is telling members of a senate committee that there is an urgent need to pass a transportation funding bill to pay for overdue road and bridge projects. Miller brought along a group of local leaders to support his plan for a sales tax on gasoline and letting local governments collect their own gas tax.  In the past five years some $650-million has been taken away from state highway projects. That mMoney that was earmarked for local projects has not been replaced. The committee is also considering other bills, including one sponsored by Garrett County Republican senator George Edwards.  It would limit the amount of gas tax revenues for mass transit to current levels.  Any new money could come from a special gasoline, or property tax in counties that have mass transit. Edwards says this proposal would be more fair to rural drivers, who are upset their gas tax money pays for mass transit programs in urban areas…
