While the move toward a minimum wage hike in Maryland is gaining momentum in these final weeks of the general assembly session- the effort does not have the support of local lawmakers. The House voted 89-46 last week to approve incremental increases over three years that would ultimately increase the wage to $10.10- however Delegates Kevin Kelly and Wendell Beitzel voted in opposition. Delegate Leroy Myers was absent from the floor vote, both he and State Senator George Edwards are on record in opposition. The Senate has not yet voted on the measure. All members of the local delegation have argued that a minimum wage increase hurts small businesses, thus having a negative impact on the economy.
