Aaron Laffey, Major League Baseball Player, recently visited with children at The Maryland Salem Children’s Trust and Salem School. A native of Potomac Park, MD who was drafted out of Allegany High School in 2003 by the Cleveland Indians. Aaron reached his goal of becoming a professional baseball player at the age of 22 with his debut pitching for the Indians. Over the span of Aaron's Major League career, he has pitched for 9 professional teams, including 6 Major League teams (Cleveland Indians, Seattle Mariners, New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Mets, Colorado Rockies).
An internet search for Laffey would reveal many details of his life including financial success as a professional ball player, career stats, and even his height and weight. What you won’t find are the personal struggles he faced. Money, expensive cars, big houses, drugs and alcohol could never satisfy him. Aaron revealed his story to the youth and shared how a relationship with Jesus Christ led him to find the true meaning in life.
Aaron also spent several hours with the children in each of the Salem residential group homes on a more individual level. His platform to reach youth and share his own shortcomings and struggles was uplifting for the children of the Salem. They were inspired by his story, and impressed that a Major Leaguer came to visit them in their homes so he could get to know them and take a step inside their lives.
About his visit, Aaron said, “It was an honor and blessing to be invited to Salem and have the chance to speak to and spend time with the kids. The love, care and guidance being provided to the youth from all the people on staff is second-to-none. These children are so blessed to have so much available to them and more importantly people who really care about them and their future. I look forward to making return visits to Salem.” While his baseball career is currently in transition, he explained he is not worried about his future, because he is trusting God’s will for his life.
