Move To Shift Cost Of Teachers Pensions Approved

It has been dreaded by local governments for years- and on Wednesday it came to reality with the Maryland House of Delegates following the lead of the Senate and approving a series of spending transfers, including a move to shift the cost of teacher pensions from the state to county governments within four years. The vote was 86-51. While a disparity grant will assist Allegany County in having to foot that bill in the next fiscal year- there may be no such coverage in the future. Allegany County School Superintendent David Cox told WCBC News that although the concept has been discussed in recent years- it never had the endorsement of Governor Martin O’Malley until January- and that is what tipped the scales…
