Holiday Season Sees Increase in Drunk Driving

According to AAA, New Year's Day consistently ranks among to the year's deadliest days for alcohol-related traffic fatalities. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 9878 people died in drunk driving crashes in 2011. In Maryland, there were 162 drunk driving deaths in 2011. According to Maryland State Police, drunk driving arrests have been increasing with 47 arrests of impaired drivers occuring in November and 50 people arrested for impaired driving already in December just in Washington County. Many arrests happen through saturation patrol, with more officers out watching the roads.
