July 31st, 2016 by WCBC Radio

For the second time in less than a week, a Maryland State Police helicopter crew rescued an injured teenager who had fallen into a crevasse next to Chimney Rock, a rugged and remote area located in Catoctin Mountain National Park in Frederick County. The teenager had sustained traumatic injuries after falling into the crevasse.

Maryland State Police helicopter Trooper 3, based in Frederick, was dispatched yesterday afternoon to assist in the rescue of a teenager who had sustained traumatic injuries after falling into a crevasse. Arriving at the scene shortly after 2:15 p.m., pilots maneuvered the AW-139 helicopter into position 100 feet above a small rock outcropping at an elevation of 1,700 feet MSL. A crew member from Trooper 3 was lowered to the scene to coordinate and direct ground units.

The patient was packaged and stabilized with the assistance of emergency personnel who had hiked just under two miles in the rugged terrain to gain access to the patient. Due to the severity of injuries and remote location, an aerial extraction was required. The flight crew was assisted by the National Park Service, Frederick County Fire Department, and the Frederick County Advanced Technical Rescue Team.

The Trooper 3 crew member accompanied the injured hiker during the hoist up to the helicopter. The patient was immediately flown to Children’s National Medical Center in Washington D.C., while receiving advanced medical care from Trooper 3’s crew.
