Mullaney Supports Downtown Mall as Strictly Pedestrian

August 22nd, 2012 by WCBC Radio

The concept of re-opening the downtown Cumberland Mall to vehicular traffic comes up for debate every couple of years- most recently in the winter of 2010- and the result is usually the same. The downtown mall, amid much controversy, was converted from a drive through to a pedestrian mall back in 1978.  Since that time there have been on and off debates on the virtues of each concept every few years- however there appears to be no overwhelming support for making any changes. Two years ago the downtown business association proposed re-opening the east end of the mall to limited traffic with some parking spaces- but despite months of discussion- the idea eventually faded away.  Downtown Manager Ed Mullaney, while acknowledging the idea has some merit, says he strongly supports keeping the mall as is.
