Mullaney to step down as Downtown Manager

October 1st, 2013 by WCBC Radio

He may be the best known face in downtown Cumberland-  but after 15 years Ed Mullaney has decided that its time to retire from his longtime post as Downtown Manager. Mullaney, a retired teacher,  has spent the past 15 years  leading the effort to revitalize the downtown Cumberland Mall by spearheading and helping grow projects such as the annual Christmas Tree Lighting; the New Years Eve Ball Drop; Ground Hog Day  and the popular Friday After Five summer series.  While Mullaney told WCBC News his decision to retire, effective October 31st, was the result of a desire to spend more time with his family- several sources have told WCBC News that it may have more to do with philosophical differences with the DDC. The Commission, earlier this summer, sent out a survey to downtown property owners with several questions that appeared to target the After Five series for major changes. Mullaney told WCBC News that while there have been differences of opinion expressed in regards to the path that should be taken in the future with the downtown area- that isn’t the reason he is retiring
