NBCI Chief of Security Reassigned

August 27th, 2013 by WCBC Radio

Just an hour before a town hall meeting scheduled by the correctional officers union to discuss incidents of violence at the North Branch Correctional Institution- the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS) announced the removal and reassignment of the Chief of Security at North Branch Correctional Institution (NBCI). This action came because the officer was not notified of the threat as required by policy.  The ongoing investigation has uncovered several deficiencies in how senior level staff at the institution followed the notification policy. The former security chief will remain employed with the Department but will be reassigned.  The investigation is continuing and the Department expects to announce additional disciplinary action.  The meeting, held at Allegany College of Maryland, lasted nearly two hours as dozens of AFSCME members voiced criticisms and concerns, and asked questions of Public Safety Secretary Gary Maynard. The concensus is that NBCI is a maximum security facility being operated with medium security guidelines.
