NBCI Death Possible Homicide

A 59-year-old inmate was found dead this morning in his cell at North Branch Correctional Institution in Cumberland, Maryland.  Investigators are probing the inmate death as a possible homicide.

The victim was found unresponsive in his cell by correctional officers. The cellmate of the victim is being questioned regarding the death.  The deceased was serving 25 years for sex offenses and has been in prison since 2011. The identity of the victim is not being released until next of kin have been notified.

State law requires possible homicides in correctional facilities to be investigated by the Maryland State Police. Detectives from the DPSCS Internal Investigative Division have secured the scene and are working with Maryland State Police homicide investigators on the case. No further information is available at this time.
