The Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services announced Friday that Jon Galley, the executive director of the north region, which includes the North Branch Correctional Institution in Cresaptown, will retire effective Nov. 1. The DPSCS communication said that Galley, who served for 46 years in corrections, “brought national accreditation and unit management to Maryland prisons.” The announcement comes on the heels of a recent spike in inmate-on-officer violence at NBCI which culminated in the Aug. 5 stabbing of officer Herbert Hilliard by an inmate. Although he received 10 stab wounds, Hilliard survived the attack. “He is known nationally as a professional in corrections and has brought significant and positive change to the state’s prison system. I wish him the best in retirement,” said Gary Maynard, secretary of the DPSCS. Galley, 69, is a Pennsylvania native. He has held several posts in the corrections system including a stint as warden at the Western Correctional Institution. “The best job in the business is being a warden. You’re close to the ground, to the staff and inmates. It’s where you can really make a difference,” said Galley.
