Nearly 200 Juveniles Released From Maryland Detention Centers Amid Virus Concerns

April 28th, 2020 by WCBC Radio

Sam J. Abed, Maryland’s secretary of juvenile services, said Monday the state has released nearly 200 adolescents from juvenile detention centers amid coronavirus concerns.  WBAL reports that during a virtual meeting with the House of Delegates Judiciary Committee, Abed said the release of inmates came after court rulings pressing the importance of keeping kids safe in the current crisis. Through April 24, Abed said 175 juveniles have been released from state detention facilities.  The majority of juveniles released held nonviolent and misdemeanor charges, Abed said.

Following the release, the number of juveniles detained on misdemeanor charges dropped from 44% to 25%, Abed said. He also reported the percentage of black juvenile detainees dropped from 77% to 58%.

A total of five juveniles contracted the coronavirus while in state facilities, and all five have recovered, according to Abed. He said 11 facility staff members have tested positive for the virus, and three have since recovered.
