New Traffic Laws in Effect

October 1st, 2011 by WCBC Radio

A new set of traffic rules goes into effect today for Maryland drivers. One change centers on drunk drivers, with an ignition interlock system being required for underage drunk drivers and anyone who has more than one DUI conviction within five years. Text messaging behind the wheel is also now a primary offense. According to WBAL News, Governor Martin O’Malley announced Maryland reached a record low number of victims killed in traffic collisions in 2010 with 496 fatalities. The previous low was in 2009 with 550 people lost, a nine percent decrease.
