You don’t have to go to New York City for a festive New Year’s Eve atmosphere. Cumberland will continue the annual tradition of ringing in the new year with a family-friendly celebration downtown- and once again WCBC Radio will provide live coverage from the event with Bridget Manley, Paul Mullen and Bryan Gowans hosting the coverate. This year’s celebration features music, balloons, a colorful pyrotechnic display and hundreds of your closest friends. The Mayor and City Council along with 94.1 QZK and the Downtown Development Commission will present the BB&T Rockin’ New Year’s Eve Ball Drop & Fireworks beginning at 10:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 31 in Historic City Center.
The official celebration will last about two hours, but the celebration starts early and ends late as downtown restaurants host dinners and downtown bars host parties.
94.1 QZK will be playing hit music and a live video feed of Times-Square in New York will be projected on the side of a building as revelers count down to 2016. The YMCA’s Fusion Dance Crew will be on hand to help get the party started with a lively performance.
WCBC 1270 AM will broadcast live as the New Year’s Eve Ball makes its way down The Cumberland Arms building on the corner of Baltimore & Liberty Streets.
At the stroke of midnight, the numerals of the New Year “2016” burst to life. A celebratory blizzard of colorful balloons and streamers are launched off The Cumberland Arms building as revelers welcome the New Year.
Revelers will also enjoy a memorable firework show to ring in 2016 as part of this high-energy community celebration. The dazzling fireworks display will be launched from the Baltimore Street bridge over Wills Creek. To create a safe event, Baltimore Street between Mechanic and Greene Streets will be closed to both pedestrian and automotive traffic beginning at 10 p.m. to allow for setup of the fireworks display. The Market Street bridge can be used to access downtown.
