No binding agreement, but councilman still supports city investment in Rolling Mill project

December 13th, 2015 by WCBC Radio

Outgoing Cumberland City Councilman  David Kauffman released a statement via social media late Sunday afternoon fully endorsing the planned redevelopment of the Rolling Mill area- while at the same time acknowledging that not all of the public’s questions about the project have been adequately addressed. The plan, known as the Maryland Avenue Revitilization project, is the concept of the Cumberland Economic Development Corporation- and essentially would see about 60 properties purchased and demolished to make way for future commercial development. The Corporation announced in September an arrangement with Pentex, a Pennsylvania based developer, to work on the  project. However, while a press release referred to “engaging” Pentex and there were statements using the term “agreement”-  Kauffman suggests there is no signed memorandum of understanding (MOU). Instead what has been signed is a non binding letter of intent. In the statement, Kauffman says “even If the relationship between the developer and the CEDC dissolves, the city is  confident that the planned $2.5 million investment in the redevelopment of this area will net positive results financially and increase the confidence of potential investors who can play a significant role in the future growth of the city”. The third and final reading of an ordinance committing the city’s investment had been scheduled as part of the city council’s agenda for tomorrow (Tuesday) night’s regular meeting.
