A handful of citizens addressed the Cumberland Mayor and City Council Tuesday night and the city officials were presented with essentially an impossible challenge- reduce a $1.3 million budget shortfall without raising taxes or cutting services. The city has now held a total of six public sessions to receive input on the budget and the overall fiscal challenges facing the city- and there seems to be no clear consensus. No final decisions have been made, but Mayor Brian Grim says a close to ten percent tax hike would be able to address the issue this year- without the need for drastic cuts to services such as police and fire.
