Fire that began in an outside wall of a Scenic Lane residence at about 3:30 a.m., Thursday was discovered by the occupants, who then safely escaped the burning single-story dwelling, according to the Mineral County 911 Emergency Center. The Cumberland Times News reports Wiley Ford, Ridgeley and Short Gap volunteer fire department extinguished the fire but not before it extended to the interior of the dwelling, located off Route 28. “We had the fire knocked down within five minutes of our arrival at the scene,” said Wiley Ford Fire Chief Sean Malone. Damage to the residence of the Aaron Davis family was described as moderate, according to the emergency center. Most of the damage was caused by smoke and water. The cause of the fire remains under investigation but it appears to be accidental, Malone said. District 16 firefighters stood by during the incident at the Wiley Ford fire station. Ridgeley was the last company to clear, returning to its station shortly after 5 a.m., according to the 911 center.
