No Philosophy Change at Animal Shelter

March 6th, 2012 by WCBC Radio

No “official” philosophy change has been approved by Allegany County or management at the Animal Shelter- but for all intents and purposes the local animal adopting facility is essentially a “no kill” shelter at this time. Efforts to design and build a new state of the art shelter have picked up in recent months- and improving the lines of communication between management, volunteers and animal control has also been identified as a primary objective. There has been no shortage of negative publicity about the shelter in recent years- however Emergency Services Director Dick Devore- whose department oversees the shelter- says much of that is unfounded. For example, he says for every isolated cases of adoptions not working out for whatever reason- there hundreds of others that work extremely well.

The Allegany County Animal Shelter may not be called a No Kill Shelter by the management but even Commissioner Valentine refers to the facility as a No Kill Shelter. Either way, the Allegany County Animal Shelter is a No Kill shelter by definition:
A no-kill shelter is most widely defined as an animal shelter where 90% of all animals received are not euthanized. Ideally, No Kill would mean all “adoptable” and “treatable” animals are saved and only “unadoptable” or “non-rehabilitatable” animals are euthanized, but 90% is the threshold.
