Nuns Robbed Of Gifts For Poor Get Their Purchases Back

November 28th, 2018 by WCBC Radio

WBAL reports a group of Maryland nuns was targeted by crooks while shopping for those less fortunate, but the story has a positive ending. The Little Sisters of the Poor is an order that runs a hospice called St. Martin's Home. They rely solely on donations to operate the hospice. The sisters had planned to spend Tuesday wrapping Christmas presents, not searching for stolen ones seemingly swiped Monday night by a Grinch disguised as a good Samaritan at the Columbia Costco. Sister Joseph Caroline and Sister Bernadette walked out of the store, fully dressed in their habits, wheeling two carts of gifts for the elderly, poor hospice residents and employees. They got ready to load the purchases in the car when a man approached them.

When the sisters got home, they opened the trunk and saw half their stuff was missing. They said they panicked and planned to file a police report Tuesday. But then came a call from Costco that the sisters' purchases had been found.

The sisters have a theory that when Sister Bernadette looked the crook right in the eye to say thank you, his will crumbled and he ditched the cart. Though, how it all stayed dry and intact through the rain remains a mystery.

"Today is Giving Tuesday, so you never know the good it might inspire in someone else to assist the poor in some way," Caroline said.

The sisters said they might still file a police report, if only that it might help provide a warning that this can happen to anyone.

Anyone inspired to give and who would like to donate to the Little Sisters of the Poor can learn more about them at their website.
