Officials React To Same Sex Marriage Ruling

June 27th, 2015 by WCBC Radio

After the U.S. Supreme Court’s historic decision legalizing gay marriage in all 50 states, Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin took no stance on the court’s decision but offered mostly positive remarks. Tomblin pointed out that same-sex marriage has been legal in West Virginia since a federal appeals court decision in October. “West Virginia has recognized same-sex marriages and state agencies have taken the necessary steps to ensure equal protection. The Supreme Court’s ruling confirms those actions, and I continue to encourage all West Virginians, regardless of their personal beliefs, to uphold our state’s tradition of treating one another with dignity and respect.” After that October ruling by the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, state Attorney General Patrick Morrisey dropped his defense of the West Virginia law banning same-sex marriage. On Friday, Morrisey said he was “very disappointed” with the Supreme Court’s decision.
