O’Malley Expected To Release Transportation Plan This Week

Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley is expected to release his transportation plan this week- and all signs point to a proposed hike in the gas tax. While it won’t be popular with drivers- a potential for an enhanced revenue stream could bode well for local governments badly in need of having key projects funded. Allegany County’s leaders, in a recent meeting with the state’s Secretary of Transportation Beverley Swaim-Staley outlined the top local transportation priorities.  The secretary said the cash-strapped state will have to look at new funding ideas in the future. Depending on whether a federal House or Senate bill passes, Maryland will either be flat-funded for federal transportation funding, or, along with the other states, take a significant hit. She said that even though Allegany County’s request list is conservative comparatively speaking- they still carry a steep price tag…
