O’Malley Raising Money To Support Same-Sex Marriage

As Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley tries to convince lawmakers to approve same sex marriage, the governor apparently is also raising money for the cause.  The Washington Post reports the governor has sent an email to campaign supporters asking them to donate to the group Marylanders for Marriage Equality. The group is a coalition of gay rights and labor groups that is campaigning for the bill.  State law prevents the governor or any official from raising campaign donations during the 90-day legislative session.  However, aides to O’Malley believe the solicitation is legal because the group is not connected to the governor in any way, even though it backs his legislation. Supporters believe the bill can pass the Senate, but they believe they are around five votes short of the 71 needed to pass the House of Delegates. Anne Arundel County Republican Delegate Don Dwyer, who is among the lawmakers leading the opposition to same sex marriage, told WBAL that he thinks the bill will never make it to voters.
