O’Malley Says Collective Bargaining Vote In Ohio Sends Message

Ohio voters on Tuesday rejected a law limiting collective bargaining for 350,000 unionized public workers, capping an expensive campaign that pitted teachers, firefighters, and police officers against the state's GOP leadership. The landslide vote to repeal the Ohio law – 62 percent to 38 percent, according to preliminary results – was a stiff blow to Governor John Kasich and cast doubt on other Republican governors who have sought union-limiting measures as a way to curb spending.  The legislation sets mandatory health care and pension minimums for unionized government employees, bans public worker strikes, scraps binding arbitration, and prohibits basing promotions solely on seniority.  Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley, chairman of the Democratic Governors Association, said the vote should be a clear message to republicans attempting to weaken the role of unions…
