O’Malley Signs Bill to Add More Correctional Officers

Ongoing lobbying efforts on the part of union officials in recent years to see additional correctional officers added has finally paid off with Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley this week signing into law a bill that will fund the hiring of another 100 correctional officers and certain facility upgrades. Unfortunately, some union members feel it took a series of  inmate on officer assaults- including a near critical stabbing of an officer last summer at the North Branch Correctional Instituion near Cresaptown to force the issue.  Whether or not that incident triggered the action, new hires are being applauded by AFSCME representatives. Union Chief Patrick Moran, during the just completed General Assembly session,  continued to make the case for what he called a desperate need for additional officers…
