Opioid Related Deaths on the Decline

July 27th, 2018 by WCBC Radio

Have we turned the corner on the opioid epidemic in Allegany County?

Numbers released yesterday by the Maryland Department of Health give a tentative “yes,” but law enforcement has been quick to say a couple of bad months could change the story to a negative one.

Final numbers were released for 2017, and they say opioid related deaths dropped from 55 in 2016 to 39 in 2017.  For the first three months of 2018, only seven were reported, down from 15 for the same period a year prior.

Clay Stamp is the Executive Director of Maryland’s Opioid Operational Command, and commented to WCBC News on the challenges of the statewide epidemic.

Opioid related deaths have gone down only because of the “FREE” use of narcan. If rescue personnel were not so quick to give out multiple doses of the drug the number of opioid related deaths would be as high if not higher than previous years.

No we have not turned a corner. If rescue personnel were not so quick to treat with Narcan I think the numbers from Opioid related deaths would be as high if not higher than previous years.
