Orioles Pick New GM

November 14th, 2018 by WCBC Radio

The rebuilding Baltimore Orioles are closing in on their next general manager, according to multiple reports, and it's somebody who has helped engineer a rebuild before. Mike Elias, now the assistant general manager of the Houston Astros, has emerged as the top choice. MLB.com reports the northern Virginia native will get to name an assistant. Also among his first responsibilities will be hiring a new manager.

The Orioles last month moved on from Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations Dan Duquette and manager Buck Showalter after a 115-loss season.

The Houston Chronicle reports Elias ran every draft since he arrived in Houston in 2011, picking future stars like Carlos Correa and Alex Bregman.

The Astros had three straight 100-loss seasons from 2011 to 2013. They then made it to the American League Division Series in 2015 and won the World Series last year. They advanced to the American League Championship Series this year, ultimately falling to the Boston Red Sox.

The Orioles have also sought to beef up scouting and analytics that lag behind peers. USA Today, which originally broke the story, also reports Sig Mejdal, a former NASA engineer who just left the Astros after six years running their analytics, could follow Elias to Baltimore.
