Other Unions Being Impacted By Firefighters Block

January 16th, 2014 by WCBC Radio

The local firefighters unions refusal to sign off on a new health care benefits package is causing friction with other unions that are being negatively impacted. United Food and Commercial Workers Union officials appeared before the Cumberland City Council this week expressing criticism with  the position taken by the firefighters- and making it clear that the UFCW fully supports the proposed change. There are three unions, the UFCW, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees and the International Association of Firefighters Local 1715, that represent most city workers. The issue on the table is the desire of the city, along with the UFCW and AFSCME, to switch health care packages from Blue Cross Blue Shield to CIGNA. The city, UFCW and AFSCME have all been in agreement in their desire to switch to CIGNA. However, the firefighters local has opposed the change. UFCW 1994 President Gino Renne (Ren) called the firefighters position “ill advised”, saying it is hurting all city union employees.
