As Maryland continues to struggle with a growing heroin crisis, Democratic lawmakers late last week called to open new treatment centers, expand access to Naloxone at public schools and increase prevention efforts. It’s the latest effort by state officials to combat the crisis. The pair of bills, which are working their way through the General Assembly, focus on education and substance abuse treatment. In 2016, nearly 2,000 people died from overdoses in Maryland, most of them falling victim to heroin or other opioids, like prescription drugs. Earlier this month, Hogan declared a state of emergency over the epidemic. Lt Governor Boyd Rutherford heads the state’s emergency task force on heroin and opioids.
