Parking Main Debate Point at Downtown Development Meeting

It was a spirited 90 minute discussion of all things downtown Cumberland on Monday evening as the Downtown Development Commission hosted a meeting for property and business owners. The session began with brief overviews of current and future projects for the downtown area and then the meeting was opened for questions and input. Topics ranged from parking to re-opening the mall to traffic to better ways to promote the downtown businesses. The most lively and debated subject however was parking. One man suggested that the concept of free parking be offered; while another said there needs to be free or at least discounted parking for employees of downtown businesses. DDC Chair Sandi Saville said that it is clear a separate meeting needs to be held in the near future focusing solely on the issue of parking. She said there are plans to meet with city officials about discounted parking areas- primarily under the bridges- for employees….
