Physician Assisted Suicide Bill To Be Back Before Lawmakers Next Year

Supporters of physician assisted suicide in Maryland, feel they have a boost as they bring the bill back before lawmakers next year.  This year, the bill was debated in committee in both the House of Delegates and the Senate, but never made it to the floor of either chamber.  A special committee is now studying the issue.  Last week, California Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill allowing physicians to provide lethal prescriptions to mentally competent adults who have a terminal illness and are expected to die within six months.  Howard County Delegate Shane Pendergrass sponsored the bill in the House of Delegates this year, and will do the same next year.  She told WBAL that the bill will be titled the "End of Life Options Act," and will likely be similar to California's law.
