Police Arrest Man in Stolen Vehicle After Chase

On Thursday, April 30th, 2020 the Cumberland Police Department responded to the Lamont Street area for the report of Travis Leon Shears seen in the area in a stolen vehicle.  Shears also had an outstanding arrest warrant for an assault that occurred earlier in the day.  When officers arrived, they observed a 2012 Honda CRV being operated by Shears.  As officers approached the vehicle, Shears accelerated, almost striking a female in the area with the vehicle.  Officers gave chase as Shears went off-road through several yards in an attempt to elude them.  The officers were able to regain sight of Shears when he came out onto W. Oldtown Road.   A short pursuit ensued and Shears was apprehended in the area of Virginia Avenue after a short foot chase when the suspected stolen vehicle became disabled.  The 2012 Honda CRV was confirmed to be stolen out of Martinsburg, West Virginia.  Shears was served the warrant for the assault and charged additionally with unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, assault 1st and 2nd degree, theft, malicious destruction of property, and numerous motor vehicle violations.  He had a bond review before the District Court Commissioner and was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center held without bond.

    Just 18 months ago he was “of Baltimore” but misbehaving here and being warmly embraced by the locals.
