Attempted Breaking and Entering / Trespassing_____Sunday, June 08, 2014

On Sunday, June 08, 2014 at approximately 11:00 p.m., the Cumberland Police Department responded to the South Penn Elementary School located on E. Second Street in reference to two subjects being on the roof of the school and possibly trying to break in.  Upon the officers arrival contact was made with the witness who advised officers that she observed two subjects on the roof of the school.  The witness advised that as soon as the first patrol car arrived one of the suspects jumped down from the roof and took off running.  The witness stated that the other suspect ducked down behind an air conditioning unit.

Officers could not access the roof so the Cumberland Fire Department was requested to assist by responding so the officers could use a ladder.  Once on the roof officers located one of the suspects, 17 year old juvenile male.  This juvenile was placed under arrest.  The second suspect who fled was identified and officers were able to locate the suspect, another 17 year old male a short distance away from the school.  This juvenile was also placed under arrest.

The school was checked and it did not appear as though the juveniles were able to make entry into the school.  A member of the Board of Education was contacted and advised of the incident.  An employee of the school responded and did not locate any problems.

Both juveniles were charged with attempted fourth degree burglary and trespassing on school property.  Both juveniles were released to family pending further action at juvenile court.
