Police Make Arrests on Theft, Domestic Violence

Domestic Assault Arrest

On 07/30/16 officers from the Cumberland City Police responded to W. Oldtown Road for a reported assault in progress.  Upon the officer’s arrival they were contacted by the victim outside of her residence. 

The victim told the officers that she ran out of her apartment to seek safety from her boyfriend, Donte Ammon VanPelt.  According to the victim, VanPelt began screaming and then pushed her.  The victim stated that the confrontation escalated to the point that VanPelt began choking her.  The victim was able to free herself from VanPelt and leave the residence.  Once outside she realized that her child was still in the residence, upon attempting to enter back into the residence, VanPelt reportedly held a knife to her throat and told her not to come inside.

The victim once again ran from the residence and waited for the police to arrived.

The victim provided the officers with a key to her residence, upon entering they were able to safely place VanPelt under arrest.

VanPelt was transported to the station for charges and processing, he was later taken to the District Court Commissioner for his initial appearance.  As a result of the hearing VanPelt was held at the Allegany County Detention Center on a $10,000.00 bond.

The victim received superficial injuries that did not require medical attention, the child was unharmed.

Assault 1st degree

Assault 2nd degree

Theft Arrest

On 07/31/16 officers from the Cumberland City Police responded to Howard Street for a theft complaint.  Upon their arrival the officers contacted the victim, who told the officers that a male subject left the restaurant without paying for his food.  The officers located the male subject in the area of the Western Maryland train station.  The subject, Shawn Patrick McElwee was identified by the victim and was then placed under arrest by the officers.  McElwee was transported to the police station where he was issued a criminal citation, and released pending trial in District Court.

Charge:

Theft less than $100.00
