Police make theft, burglary arrests

On Friday at approximately 12:30 PM the Cumberland City Police Department responded to a business in the 700 block of Park Street for a shoplifting complaint. Officers arrived on scene and spoke to an employee. Officers learned that Samuel Charley Berry III and Debra May Berry had concealed merchandise and were attempting to leave the business without paying. Officers arrested both subjects and they were released on criminal citations pending trial in District Court.

 

Arrested – Samuel Charley Berry III (39) Cresaptown, MD

Charge – Theft less than $100.00

 

Arrested – Debra May Berry (62) Cresaptown, MD

Charge – Theft over $100.00 less than $1,500.00

 

 

Adult Arrest

 

On 10/04/2020 at approximately 2:00 PM the Cumberland City Police Department responded to a residence in the double digit block of Virginia Avenue for a theft complaint. Officers spoke to the property manager who advised someone had removed furniture from an empty rental property. Officers spoke to several witnesses and developed a suspect in the case. The stolen items were recovered and charges were applied for. As a result of the investigation Melvin Eugene Mumma Sr was arrested on 10/16/2020 for burglary and related charges. Mr. Mumma was taken before a District Court Commissioner and remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center on a $2,000.00 bond.

Charges – 2 counts each of Burglary 2nd Degree and Theft less than $100.00
