Primary for Cumberland Council Race

January 9th, 2012 by WCBC Radio

There WILL be a primary election in April for two Cumberland City Council seats. The seats currently held by Mary Beth Pirolozzi and Harold Butch Hendershot are up for election this year- and with the deadline to file set at 9 pm Wednesday- there are now a total of seven candidates on file. 6 or fewer candidates would not have required a primary. While Pirolozzi will not seek another term in office, Hendershot- the longest serving member of council will seek re-election having filed last week. In addition to the incumbent, those on file as of the close of city hall yesterday include: Nicole Wagoner;  Steven Phillips; Albert Keener; Dominic Dearcangelis; David Caporale and Sylvester Young III. Aside from Hendershot- who first took office in 1994- and Keener who ran for council two years ago- all of the others are first time candidates. The activitity for two Allegany County Board of Education seats has not been as great with only incumbent Ed Root on file to date. The seats held by Root and Jeff Metz are up for election this year- however Metz told WCBC News last week he won’t seek re-election to the board. A total of five candidates for the two seats would necessitate a primary- four or fewer will see the race decided directly by the November General Election.
