Prisoner Shot By Hampshire County Deputy In Route To PHRJ

On Tuesday police reported to the residence of John O'Hardley, 55, of Yellow Springs along Mason Hill RD in Hampshire Co. on reports that O'Hardley was in possession of a motorcycle reportedly stolen from Frederick Co., Virginia. O'Hardly reportedly led investigators to the stolen motorcycle. Police procured a search warrant and located a meth lab, additional stolen property as well as homemade explosive devices.

While in transport to the Potomac Highlands Regional Jail in Augusta along U.S. Route 50 ; O'Hardley reportedly reached between the front seats of the police cruiser and grabbed the arresting officers gun and attempted to remove it from the holster. O'Hardley and the officer struggled. The deputy then fired one shot which struck O'Hardley in the head.

The officer and a second prisoner who was in the vehicle at the time were not seriously injured.

The incident is under investigation by West Virginia State Police at the request of the sheriff's office.
