Progress In Repair/Replacement Of City Bridges Has Slowed

May 22nd, 2019 by WCBC Radio

Repairing and/or replacing the three damaged bridges on Cumberland’s West Side remains a priority for the Mayor and City Council- however progress has slowed in recent months. It was last June when a CSX train slammed into the Washington and Fayette Street bridges. That accident, in the minds of many, is what finally got CSX Transportation to the negotiating table to begin serious talks about transferring the bridges to the city- and working toward a financial arrangement to pay for replacing the structures on Cumberland, Fayette and Washington streets.  Late last year the city and CSX were conducting monthly meetings at City Hall with the city providing regular updates on those talks. Since the start of the New Year there have been no meetings- and no updates. When asked for a progress report during Tuesday’s city council meeting, Mayor Ray Morriss said that momentum and enthusiasm to replace the bridges remains strong- however there is nothing new to report at this time as engineering studies have not yet been completed…

It’s FUNNY how companies and organizations get all kinds of incentives to come to town and set up business and do business. But when one of their trains damage infrastructure they want to pawn it off to the city to correct and maintain it. GREED again at work in America.

On a second thought: I would bet that if high level city officials lived in one of the streets affected by the bridge closures PRIORITIES WOULD BE ESCALATED TO THE TOP OF THE LIST. (That’s if they even live in the city limits)

Hey I have an idea…Why don’t we do another study and pay up the nose for it so we don’t have the funding to actually do the job. Citizens will understand if we don’t have the funds and I am sure they don’t want a tax increase to fix it as well. That’s a Win Win.

The city of Cumberland CAN NOT file a law suit. That would require educated, community minded, realistic, and objective leaders who were not in it for themselves.
