Progress Slowly Being Made With Carver Community Center

Beginning in December, questions arose from a number of citizens concerning past financial appropriations and the current state of Carver Community Center. Located at 340 Frederick St., the facility was constructed in 1921, where it operated as a high school until 1959. After closing as a high school, it was utilized by Allegany Community College for several years, and eventually was targeted to be renovated and reopened as a community center. Those plans never materialized however and the building has been dormant and deteriorating since. A number of citizens including members of the local NAACP have requested the city’s help in reviving the project. Mayor Ray Morriss reported this week that progress, albeit slow, is being made. He said the city is working to see the project’s board be reconstituted with new members; that its 501C3 status be restored; and that the keys be turned over to the city so staff can access the building to determine the extent of any damage. At that point a plan can be mapped out to revitalize efforts to see it’s turned into a full fledged community center.
