June 3rd, 2016 by WCBC Radio

On 06/03/2016, at 9:20 AM, the Allegany County Sheriff's Office responded to the Spring Gap camping and picnic grounds off Rt. 51 after receiving a report that a body had been found near the parking area by a group of bicyclists that were riding on the C & O Canal towpath. The Maryland State Police also responded. When Deputies arrived they located the body of 65 year old John Jeffery Hutter Sr.

Investigators with the Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit (C3I) responded to assist in the investigation. The crime scene was processed by an Evidence Collection Technician with the Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division.

Investigators found a vehicle registered to TWR Communications when they arrived on scene. Inside the vehicle they discovered the gun box of the .22 caliber rifle that Hutter had apparently just purchased. The rifle was located next to Hutter.

Hutter, a prominent businessman in the Cumberland area, and CEO of TWR Communications, was reported missing, and possibly suicidal, by family members on 06/02/2016. A search was conducted throughout the night by local law enforcement, but he was not located at that time.

Investigation revealed that Hutter died as a result of a single self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. The body is being sent to the Maryland State Medical Examiner's Office in Baltimore to confirm those findings and to determine the official cause of death.

The investigation is continuing by the Sheriff's Office and C3I.

No foul play is suspected.
