Proposed Redistricting Map Goes Into Effect Today

February 24th, 2012 by WCBC Radio

The proposed state redistricting map for Maryland likely will not have a major effect on local politics or on the makeup of the local legislative delegation. Neither the House of Delegates or the Maryland Senate are planning to vote on a plan to set new boundaries for the state's 47 legislative districts, by Friday- and  under legislative rules, the plan proposed by Governor Martin O'Malley automatically takes effect today. District 1 is currently represented by Sen. George Edwards and delegates Wendell Beitzel, Kevin Kelly and LeRoy Myers Jr. The district includes Garrett County, Allegany County and portions of Washington County.  The Governor’s Redistricting Advisory Committee released the legislative redistricting plan in December.  Edwards’ district will move further east and south into Washington County, where he will likely pick up Williamsport. Beitzel, who represents all of Garrett County, will add Allegany County precincts, including Rawlings and Bel Air, from Kelly’s current district, which is 1B. Kelly will pick up some additional Cumberland locations. The Governor said there are always some minor complaints when districts change, but views none of the changes as dramatic enough to cause legitimate concern…
