Proving Ground for Canal Place Authority in 2014

2014 may be a make or break year for the Canal Place Preservation and Development Authority. The year will begin with the search for a new board member to replace outgoing Chairman Andy Vick who is stepping down next week. Naming a new chairman, preparing RFP’s for the Footer Dye Works building and addressing serious fiscal concerns will also be at the top of the agenda to open the new year. The final meeting of the Authority Board last week was somewhat acrimonious as Vick referred to board member Mike Mckay as “disappointing” and accused the county commissioner of acting as an obstructionist. Mckay fired back, saying Vick’s comments were unprofessional and such exchanges were not appropriate during the regular business meeting of the board. Meanwhile both the city and the county have expressed disappointment with the Authority’s request for further funding, even after a five year agreement had come to an end.  The city is considering making an allocation to Canal Place, although it has been subject of serious debate among the council members. Mckay says he doesn’t see the county commissioners providing any additional dollars…
