Public Forum Start of Information Sharing

July 21st, 2011 by WCBC Radio

Identifying strengths and weaknesses of  each of the towns and municipalities was step number one taken by the Allegany County Commissioners in a public forum focused on the concept of combining or consolidating local government services. A session that lasted a little more than an hour at Allegany College of Maryland Wednesday afternoon featured representatives from the cities of Cumberland and Frostburg as well as the towns of Barton, Lonaconing, Luke, Westernport and Midland. The idea is to work toward streamlining government services such as law enforcement; street maintenance; elections; tax collection; code enforcement and planning in an effort to cut down the overall cost to area taxpayers- and to create  more effective and efficient governmental operations county wide. Former Cumberland Mayor Lee Fiedler served as the facilitator/moderator and emphasized that yesterdays meeting was basically designed for information sharing, with more substantive talks to begin in a matter of weeks.

Seems to me you cleared up in a paragraph or two what the Times-News tried – and failed – to do in a full-blown, front-page story.
Good for WCBC. Shame on the Times-News for passing off today's edition as quality journalism.
