Public Meeting To Be Held On Potomac River Project

The public is being encouraged to attend a meeting Thursday on the proposed River Project, called “Potomac River Project Community Conversation”.  The session, which will feature experts in funding and environmental concerns, will take place at 5:30 p.m. at the Allegany Museum on the corner Pershing and Mechanic Streets. The River Project consists of removal of the dam under the Cumberland-Ridgeley, W.Va., bridge, allowing the North Branch of the Potomac River to return to its natural state, which would also clear the way for a recreational area that would include canoeing, kayaking and boating. Sponsored by the Allegany County Chamber of Commerce, the featured speakers will be Jim Thompson of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, William Atkinson, Maryland Department of Planning and Serena McClain of American Rivers, an organization based in Washington that specializes in securing funding for river analysis and cleanup projects.
