Public Meeting to Discuss Elk Reintroduction

A public meeting to discuss the potential reintroduction of Rocky Mountain elk into Garrett and Allegany counties will take place tomorrow, Nov. 2 at 8 a.m. at the Allegany Arts Council, 9 N. Centre Street in downtown Cumberland. The three sponsors of the idea, which was announced in August 2011, are the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Maryland Department of Natural Resources and the Maryland Legislative Sportsmen’s Foundation. Representatives will attend. a telephone survey by Responsive Management, Harrisonburg, Va., found that 75 percent of those responding favored a reintroduction. Of the 809 Marylanders who responded, 230 were residents of far Western Maryland. The Allegany County Chamber of Commerce has coordinated the Friday meeting.
