Re-Watering Of C&O Canal In The Area No Longer Viewed As A Viable Project

It was back in the late 1990’s that the Corps of Engineers determined that it was feasible to re-water the C and O Canal successfully without compromising the flood protection for the City of Cumberland. In 2005 it was announced that the National Park Service, along with federal, State and local officials joined together in support of rebuilding and rewatering the 1.1-mile section of the historic C&O Canal in the area.  While the subject has been broached from time to time since then, apparently it is no longer viewed as a viable project- at least not at this time. During a recent special meeting of the Canal Place Preservation and Development Authority with the legislative delegation- Delegate Kevin Kelly said he recalled at one point the re-watering was considered essential to the economic future of Canal Place. Authority Chair Andy Vick said while that may have been the case at one point, that project is no longer near the top of the priority list…
