Embattled Allegany County Register of Wills Rebecca Drew abruptly resigned from office Tuesday morning. Drew, recently indicted by the Grand Jury on charges of misconduct in office and theft scheme, submitted her letter of resignation to the Orphans Court and it was accepted following a brief hearing. Craig Rankin, Chief Deputy Register of Wills, was appointed on an interim basis- and the Orphans Court will accept letters of interest only until 4 PM Thursday. Letters and resumes can be delivered to the Register of Wills office located on the first floor at 59 Prospect Square. 1C Delegate Mike McKay has been publicly lobbying for the position, having already announced his plans to run for that seat next year. Others rumored to have an interest in the seat include former sheriff David Goad and former city councilwoman Mary Beth Pirolozzi. Drew’s initial court appearance had been scheduled for next week, but a continuance was granted at her request moving the date to August 29th. Drew has not responded to numerous calls from WCBC Radio requesting comment. The Judges of the Orphan Court, the body that will determine Drew’s replacement, is down to two now as longtime judge Billie Gilpin resigned last weekend pointing to health issues. The remaining judges are Edward Crossland and Donna May. Gilpin’s replacement will be determined by the Republican Central Committee- which will submit a recommendation to Governor Larry Hogan for his approval.
