WBAL reports after weeks of investigations into the death of Maryland football player Jordan McNair, the University System of Maryland Board of Regents declined to order the institution to fire its athletic director, president or head football coach. However, President Wallace Loh said he will retire.
"After taking the time necessary to gather and review the facts, and based on what er know today, the Board of Regents believe the university bears responsibility for what happened to Jordan McNair and live up to that responsibility," Chairman James T. Brady said.
Brady said all three administrators scrutinized by regents–Athletic Director Damon Evans, head coach D.J. Durkin and President Wallace Loh–accepted shared responsibility for the athletic department's dysfunction, but that regents found all three are committed to reform. Durkin was back with the team at practice Tuesday.
"We believe that [Durkin] is a good man and a good coach who is devoted to the well-being of the student athletes under his charge," Brady said. "He is also at the beginning of his coaching career with a great deal of promise and much still to learn. We believe he deserves that opportunity."
He said Durkin has been "unfairly blamed" for the entirety of the department's dysfunction.
