Rep. Elijah E. Cummings on Friday will ask Baltimore residents to respect the outcome of next week's verdict in the trial of Officer Edward Nero.
Cummings will "urge Baltimore residents to respect the outcome of the trial regardless of the verdict,"according to a statement from Cummings office. He plans to address the media at11 a.m. Friday.
Circuit Judge Barry G. Williams said he plans to announce his verdict Monday, after testimony concluded in the bench trial this week.
Nero, 30, is charged with second-degree assault, reckless endangerment and two counts of misconduct for his role in placing 25-year-old Freddie Gray last April. Gray died after his arrest from spinal injuries suffered in the van, prosecutors say. His death sparked protests against police brutality, and his funeral was followed by rioting.
Nero is the second of six officers to go to trial. Before a jury failed to convict Officer William G. Porter in December, Cummings also urged peace, whatever the outcome of the case.
