Report Focuses On Improving Maryland Business Climate

February 13th, 2015 by WCBC Radio

The head of a panel says there are a lot of things Maryland can do to improve the state's business climate. Norm Augustine, the former CEO of Lockheed Martin Corp., said Thursday the state should strive to become less reliant on the federal government and diversify its economic base. The Maryland Economic Development Business Climate Commission released 32 recommendations. Lawmakers are submitting five measures to implement some of them. One would restructure economic development agencies under a secretary of commerce. Another is designed to create a stronger process to determine whether new regulations have an impact on small businesses. Legislation would create a task force to help transfer technology developed in higher education to the marketplace. Another bill could create an apprenticeship program to create job opportunities for young people. Delegate Wendel Beitzel of Garrett County is a member of the committee.
